Five Actions Californians Can Take Right Now to Promote Digital Civil Liberties

By dm

Over the next few weeks, EFF and our allies will enter our final push to pass legislation out of the California legislature that would defend and promote civil liberties. With a Democratic super-majority eager to push back against the federal government, our chances have seldom been better to move the ball forward on the state level. We have also seen bipartisan support emerge around issues such as transparency and youth access to technology.

But we need all Californians who value digital rights to flood their state lawmakers with communications demanding they send these key reforms to the governor’s desk. …read more

Digital Technologies and the Compression of Time and Distance | @ThingsExpo #DX #IoT #M2M #API

Increasingly, in a world of compressed times and distances, humans will be the inventors, designers and managers of digital systems and processes, rather than the operators. Operations will be measured in milliseconds, an inhumane speed where only the machines can deliver.
Professor Paul Virilio, a philosopher of speed, urbanist and cultural theorist, wrote at length about the impact of speed on society. He wrote that speed compresses both time and distance. Where once it took a letter 6 months to get to the other side of the world, an email can now arrive in seconds. Today’s near real-time …read more

[slides] #CloudNative Landscape | @CloudExpo #DevOps #DX #Serverless #Microservices

In his session at 20th Cloud Expo, Scott Davis, CTO of Embotics, discussed how automation can provide the dynamic management required to cost-effectively deliver microservices and container solutions at scale. He also discussed how flexible automation is the key to effectively bridging and seamlessly coordinating both IT and developer needs for component orchestration across disparate clouds – an increasingly important requirement at today’s multi-cloud enterprise.

Five Questions that Define Your #DigitalTransformation | @ThingsExpo #DX #IoT #SmartCities

I recently had the opportunity to give a 10-minute keynote at DataWorks Summit 2017. I know what most of you are thinking: Schmarzo can barely introduce himself in 10 minutes! What sort of keynote could he give in just 10 minutes? And to be honest, I too struggled with what to say.
But after some brainstorming with my marketing experts (Jeff Abbott, Erin Banks, and Chris Hill), we came up with an idea: Pose 5 questions that every organization needs to consider as they prepare themselves for digital transformation. And while I didn’t have enough time in …read more

[session] TCO and the #Cloud Adoption Lifecycle | @CloudExpo #AWS #API

IT organizations are moving to the cloud in hopes to approve efficiency, increase agility and save money. Migrating workloads might seem like a simple task, but what many businesses don’t realize is that application migration criteria differs across organizations, making it difficult for architects to arrive at an accurate TCO number. In his session at 21st Cloud Expo, Joe Kinsella, CTO of CloudHealth Technologies, will offer a systematic approach to understanding the TCO of a cloud application in order to ensure a successful migration. Additionally, he can detail CloudHealth’s experience partnering with AWS Migration and provide several proof points …read more

[slides] Machine Learning | @CloudExpo #BigData #AI #ML #DX #SmartCities

Detecting internal user threats in the Big Data eco-system is challenging and cumbersome. Many organizations monitor internal usage of the Big Data eco-system using a set of alerts. This is not a scalable process given the increase in the number of alerts with the accelerating growth in data volume and user base. Organizations are increasingly leveraging machine learning to monitor only those data elements that are sensitive and critical, autonomously establish monitoring policies, and to detect anomalous usage based on past usage.

An alignment mechanism for producing a sharp tip-separable microneedle device for trans-dermal drug delivery systems has been developed. The needle and base parts were placed on a mechanical precision motion stage to align their central axes. The overlapping region between them in the height direction was controlled by inserting a thickness gauge between them. A 400-μm-high sharp tip-separable microneedle device was successfully produced by using the developed alignment mechanism with an accuracy of less than 19 μm. We …read more

This paper examines the dynamic relationships between gold and stock markets in China. Using daily gold and stock indexes data, we estimated the DCC-GARCH model for the five bear markets since 31 October 2002, and simultaneously used different segments of China’s stock markets for analysis. Our main objective was to examine the time-varying correlations between gold and stock and to check the effectiveness of gold as a hedge or a safe haven for …read more
