Explaining climate change science & rebutting global warming misinformation

Neil deGrasse Tyson & ScepticalScience.com have a word or two for Global Warming deniers

Skeptics vigorously criticise any evidence that supports man-made global warming and yet embrace any argument, op-ed, blog or study that purports to refute global warming. This website gets skeptical about global warming skepticism. Do their arguments have any scientific basis? What does the peer reviewed scientific literature say?

The Physics Hypertextbook

©1998–2017 Glenn Elert — Author, Illustrator, Webmaster

The Physics Hypertextbook™ is an online resource that aims to present all the information about the fundamentals of Physics, often with commentary. All  physics is divided into five major books. within this online book, along with links to many other resources.

  1. Mechanics (8 chapters, 59 sections)
  2. Thermal Physics (4 chapters, 18 sections)
  3. Waves and Optics (4 chapters, 23 sections)
  4. Electricity and Magnetism (8 chapters, 31 sections)
  5. Modern Physics (5 chapters, 25 sections)

Supplementary sections on units and mathematics as well as reference material are gathered into a sixth book.

The seventh “book” in the table of contents is just a collection of links to affiliated webpages, websites, and services — most of which Glenn Elert also manages.

  • Foundations (6 chapters, 21 sections)
  • More (5 chapters, 17 sections)

Each section is divided into five pages (except the sections that contain only reference material).

Special colors are used whenever a word or phrase is explained for the first time.

Primary concepts are highlighted in bright red, secondary concepts in dark red, and important persons in blue.

The Physics Hypertextbook™ is the intellectual property of Glenn Elert who is solely responsible for its content. No person or organization besides the author played any part in its creation (except where explicitly stated). You can view, copy, and reproduce any part of this work for non-commercial purposes as described in the fair use clause of United States Copyright Law.

IU & international partners light 100G transatlantic link

Use Aqua Comms’ AEConnect subsea cable

http://www.geant.org/BLOOMINGTON, IN, USA —Research flowing between the United States, Europe and Africa got a significant boost early this year when Indiana University and its partners flipped the switch on a new 100 Gigabits per second (Gbps) transatlantic link.

The new network runs over the America-Europe Connect (AEConnect) subsea cable system provided by vendor Aqua Comms DAC in support of the Networks for European, American and African Research, or NEAAR, grant.

Dr. Jennifer Schopf, director of International Networks at IU, is the principal investigator on the NEAAR award, which provides services and bandwidth connecting researchers in the U.S. with their counterparts in Europe and Africa. Continue reading

Coventry University awards the world’s first Metrology degree

by Lauren Clarke 14th Jan, 2017

Online  —  Ben Singer, a 3D scanning specialist at Woking-based Physical Digital, has graduated from the world’s first and only foundation degree in Metrology with a Distinction.

The course, hosted by Coventry University, consists of modules including mathematics, engineering science, measurement methods and systems, and uncertainty in measurement, combined with professional practice in Metrology – the scientific study of measurement.

Metrology plays a vital role in modern life – especially in the business, manufacturing and aerospace industries to reduce waste to save money and time.

The degree was completed on a part time basis, allowing 29-year-old Ben to combine it with his role as Metrologist at Physical Digital.

Lectures and practical sessions at university were complemented by independent study and coursework, integrating study with work projects and responsibilities.

Ben, who can now add FDEng Metrology to his name, said: “It was great to meet fellow professionals at the same point in their career and to gain a broader understanding of more traditional forms of equipment because, at Physical Digital, we only have exposure to high end equipment.

“The metrology degree has opened many opportunities within my firm and helped me to progress on my self-development.

“At the moment this is the only Metrology qualification available but there are talks of a Master’s degree in Metrology which I would be interested in.”

The Metrology course at Coventry University was designed as a vocational qualification which the University developed in collaboration with employers, ensuring that the skills and experience gained are valuable in the workplace.

Online — Throughout 21 CFR and guidance documents for the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, and medical device industries, the application of statistical methods are specified for: setting validation criteria and specifications, performing measurement systems analysis (MSA), conducting stability analysis, using design of experiment (DOE) for process development and validation, developing process control charts, and determining process capability indices.

Different statistical methods are required for each of these particular applications.

Data and tolerance intervals are common tools used for setting acceptance criteria and specifications. Simple linear regression and analysis-of-covariance (ANCOVA) are used for setting expiries and conducting stability analysis studies. Continue reading
